Although born in the Hills of West Virginia, Laura was raised in Homer,
New York. Laura grew up swimming, horseback riding and acting. Her stage
debut was in the 6th Grade production of Peter Pan, where she supported
a six-foot cardboard tree, that she had designed and painted. Laura found
this supporting, non-speaking role quite difficult and set about obtaining
speaking and singing roles thereafter. In High School Laura
took voice lessons, joined the Shakespearean and Thespian Societies and
was Regional Director of a Statewide Student Government organization,
while holding down a job as a private chef.
Laura met the love of her life and husband of seventeen
years, Tom, volunteering on the Buffalo State College Ambulance
Squad. After graduating from college, Laura and Tom settled briefly
in Cortland, but then found their true community in Auburn. Laura
began her design career at The Citizen, working in the
composing department, and later becoming Creative Director. After
a soul searching (and cheap) camping vacation that included the
Kentucky Horse Park and the Chattanooga Tennessee battlefield (see Tom bio), Laura bravely gave her notice at The Citizen and opened the doors of Coburn Design in November
1992.
